The enemy on all fronts

Documentary
Italy / 2017
10 x 8 min

A journey in 10 episodes to discover the most powerful weapon deployed during the First World War: propaganda.

The First World War is considered the first contemporary war, because it brings out new weapons and technologies, but above all because it mobilizes public opinion and the imagination of millions of people. The enemy on all fronts tells of the methods used by the propaganda and satire of European countries during the First World War, through the analysis of cinematographic materials, periodicals, satirical and illustrated magazines, trench newspapers.

A path made of images taken from the archive materials of the Luxardo Fund of the Civici Musei of Udine, an international archive (materials from Italy, France, Austria, Germany, England, United States and Eastern European countries) that allows a glance on the themes of propaganda and satire in the war period. The documentary guides us in a war of accusations and simplifications that shocked Europe as a whole, creating a conflicting imaginary that would have marked European culture in the following decades.
